Downtown Main Street rebuilt: new roadway, sidewalks and bike lanes

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is excited to announce that Highway 27 through Wahkon is open to all traffic and the signed detour has been removed.

MnDOT completed reconstruction and improvements on Highway 27 from east of Chippewa Avenue to east of Fourth Street W in Wahkon, along the south shore of Mille Lacs Lake. Crews installed curb and gutter and underground storm sewer, added bike lanes along both sides of the roadway, updated sidewalks and pedestrian approaches, and added new landscaping and streetscape elements to enhance downtown Main Street.

With all lanes open, motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists will experience a smoother roadway, improved drainage and safer travel through Wahkon. Businesses and local destinations are accessible as usual.

MnDOT thanks the local community and travelers for their patience during construction and detour. Please drive with care, watch for people walking and biking, and obey posted signs.
